Hosted by Yours Humanly and led by Principal\u00a0Nancy Klinkner,\u00a0this was one of twenty family literacy nights we plan to host in 2023\u20132024 and 2024\u20132025 at ten Concord elementary schools served by Mt. Diablo Unified School District.<\/p>\n<p>Evening activities included free book distributions, library card sign-ups, literature-themed games,\u00a0read-alongs, spelling hopscotch, art projects,\u00a0and a light buffet style dinner.<\/p>\n<p>We purchased enough books to provide one free book to every student at Westwood; that evening, we distributed more than 240 books for students to take home and keep as their own. Westwood\u2019s teachers selected the titles and books were distributed by grade:\u00a0<em>More Than Words: So Many Ways to Say What We Mean<\/em>,\u00a0Roz McLean;\u00a0<em>Your Name is a Song<\/em>, Jamilah Thompkins Bigelow;\u00a0<em>Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons &amp; Marshmallows<\/em>, Asia Citro;\u00a0<em>Dragons in a Bag<\/em>, Zetta Elliott;\u00a0<em>The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez<\/em>, Adrianna Cuevas;\u00a0<em>Refugee<\/em>, Alan Gratz.<\/p>\n<p>Because Westwood serves a significant population of deaf and hard of hearing students, an American Sign Language interpreter was there to interpret the evening\u2019s program. And, a Spanish-language interpreter was on hand to translate the program in real time.<\/p>\n<p>Our Westwood Family Literacy Night was featured in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdusd.org\/about\/news\/news-details\/~board\/news\/post\/yours-humanly-and-the-city-of-concord-bring-family-literacy-night-to-westwood-elementary-and-9-other-mdusd-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">newsletter<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>The Yours Humanly Family Literacy Night project, which will benefit more than 4,000 students during the 2023\u20132024 and 2024\u20132025 school years, is made possible through\u00a0our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dehradunjunction.com\/ngo\/what-we-do\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Coloring Futures<\/a> initiative and by a generous grant of $213,000 from the City of Concord.
